2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 British-American science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, and was partially inspired by Clarke’s short story “The Sentinel”. Clarke concurrently wrote the novel 2001: A Space Odyssey which was published soon after the film was released. The story deals with a series of encounters between humans and mysterious black monoliths that are apparently affecting human evolution, and a voyage to Jupiter tracing a signal emitted by one such monolith found on the Moon. The film is frequently described as an epic, both for its length and scope, and for its affinity with classical epics.Thematically, the film deals with elements of human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial life.

Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking 2001: A Space Odyssey opened the door to all the films and filmmakers who followed it. Through interviews with directors such as George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Sydney Pollack – as well as special effects professionals and cultural historians – this documentary examines the legacy of Kubrick’s masterpiece and its influence on science fiction films, special effects and world cinema.

Storyline Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed-to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

Ray Kurzweil is moeilijk in één kwalificatie te typeren: hij is uitvinder, schrijver, futurist en zakenman. Maar bovenal is deze gedreven Amerikaan bekend als prediker van de Singulariteit — grofweg samengevat het moment waarop mens en machine één zullen zijn. Volgens Kurzweil is dat visioen niet ver weg; in 2029 zullen computers even intelligent zijn als mensen. Dit komt onder andere door de wetmatigheid van exponentiële groei, stelt Kurzweil. “Men onderschat de acceleratie van de technologie.” In hoog tempo worden de denkbeelden en drijfveren van Kurzweil, die over de hele wereld reist om zijn gedachtegoed uit te leggen, uiteengezet. De wereld van nanotechnologie, genetica en robots wordt geïllustreerd met behulp van grafische technieken, (archief)filmpjes en interviews. Voor- en tegenstanders, van Californië tot Hong Kong, komen aan het woord. Kurzweil legt uit waarom hij geïnteresseerd is in de “bestemming van de mens-machinebeschaving” en waarom hij onsterfelijkheid najaagt (“Ik wil mijn vader weer tot leven brengen”). Een kennismaking met een opvallende man die, zoals zijn vrouw fijntjes zegt, een ongelooflijk vermogen heeft om pillen te slikken — zo’n tweehonderd per dag.
