Michael Fossel‘s dream is to reverse human aging and since 1996 he has been a strong and vocal advocate of experimenting with telomerase therapy as a potential way of intervention in a wide variety of medical conditions related to aging. In addition, Fossel is one of those unique people who are a real pleasure to not only see speaking from the stage but also to meet in person. And having done both of these, I can honestly say that Michael is as much an impassioned expert speaker as he is a compassionate human being. Not only that but he is also a generous host, who loves entertaining guests visiting his fabulous house near Rapid Falls, Michigan and I have to admit I had tons of fun socializing with him both in front and behind camera. So, all in all, it was a lot of fun meeting and interviewing Dr. Fossel for my Singularity 1 on 1 podcast.

During our 1 hour discussion with Michael we cover a variety of interesting topics such as: his dream to reverse aging and the desirability and feasibility thereof; the Hayflick limit of cell division and Aubrey de Grey’s concerns that telomerase therapy may cause cancer; the distinction between reversing aging and living forever; his “non-sexy” tips on healthy living; his take on cryonics and transhumanism…

My favorite quotes that I will take away from this interview with Michael Fossel are:

“Ageing is dynamic, not static”

“Never mind the low-hanging fruit. [...] Go for the important one!”

“The reason to do this [reverse aging] is not to double somebody’s lifespan. The reason to do this is because people out there are hurting. They are frightened. They are terrified by the things that happen to them when they get disease. The reason to do this is because we are human and we should be working at this. It’s not playing God, it is working at being human. It’s compassion. It’s not a matter of living longer, it is a matter of making people healthy again.”

Building Artificial Intelligence is “Summoning the Demon” Says Tesla CEO Elon Musk. (from 1:07:19)

Elon Musk is no Luddite, but that doesn’t mean he’s eager to embrace all new technology.

“I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence,” the CEO of both SpaceX and Tesla, said Friday in a talk at MIT in Cambridge, Mass. “If I were to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that.”

During his talk–given in conjunction with the centennial celebration of the university’s Aeronautics and Astronautics Department–Musk urged government authorities to regulate A.I. to prevent researchers from doing “something very foolish.”

“With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon,” he said. “You know all those stories where there’s the guy with the pentagram and the holy water, and it’s like yeah, he’s sure he can control the demon. Doesn’t work out.”

This isn’t the first time Musk has expressed concerns over A.I. In an interview with The Huffington Post in January, he said, “I hope the A.I. is nice to us.” And earlier this year, he wrote in a tweet that artificial intelligence is “potentially more dangerous than nukes.”

Among those who seem to share Musk’s concerns is celebrated physicist Stephen Hawking.

“Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history,” Hawking said in a Huffington Post blog post co-written by physicists Max Tegmark and Frank Wilczek and computer scientist Stuart Russell. “Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.”

Quote: “…The people who are changing the world read science fiction.” “In a sense, science fiction is history in reverse…”

Greg Bear is truly one of the masters of classic science fiction – he has written over 35 books, that have sold millions of copies, and have been translated in 22 languages. No wonder I was not only immensely excited but also pretty nervous while preparing to interview him face to face. As it turned out I was worrying for nothing: Greg Bear is a really affable fellow with a fantastic sense of humor and, together with his wife Astrid, endlessly generous hospitality. Bear is also a passionate macro-photographer with the most stunning dragon-fly pictures that I have seen in my life. Thus it is a total understatement to say that I had an absolute blast spending a full day of shooting 4 Singularity 1 on 1 episodes at his house, including the attached 90 min interview.

During our conversation with Greg Bear we cover a variety of interesting topics such as: how he got inspired to write; what is science fiction; the role of photography and visual imagery; the merging of philosophy and science; sci fi as the jazz of literature; religion, mysticism and his take on Jesus; the birth of Comic-Con; whether science fiction inspires science or vice versa; the singularity, transhumanism and “the brick wall of philosophy”…

This interview was so packed of intellectual gems that I almost feel like shying away from listing any. But here are just two of my favorites, and you feel free to share yours in the comment section below: “…The people who are changing the world read science fiction.” “In a sense, science fiction is history in reverse…”

Panel near the end of the Singularity Summit Australia 2011 on the Perils of Prediction (well the benefits as well – excuse the catchy title).
Lawrence Krauss , Steve Omohundro and Ben Goertzel set sail on an epic adventure careening through the perilous waves of prediction! And the seas are angry my friends! Our future stands upon the prow our past drowns in the wake. Our most foolish sailors leave the shore without a compass and an eyeglass. We need to stretch our forecasting abilities further than our intuitions and evolved biases allow.

Featuring Lawrence Krauss, Ben Goertzel and Steve Omohundro.

http://2011.singularitysummit.com.au

Lawrence Maxwell Krauss (born May 27, 1954) is a Canadian-American theoretical physicist who is a professor of physics, Foundation Professor of the School of Earth and Space Exploration, and director of the Origins Project at Arizona State University. He is the author of several bestselling books, including The Physics of Star Trek and A Universe from Nothing. He is an advocate of scientific skepticism, science education, and the science of morality.

Ben Goertzel (born December 8, 1966 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), is an American author and researcher in the field of artificial intelligence. He currently leads Novamente LLC, a privately held software company that attempts to develop a form of strong AI, which he calls “Artificial General Intelligence”. He is also the CEO of Biomind LLC, a company that markets a software product for the AI-supported analysis of biological microarray data; and he is an advisor to the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and formerly its Director of Research.

Interview with renowned author Vernor Vinge – about the Technological Singularity, ways to think about it, strategic forecasting, future studies and risk. Specific Topics: The Beginnings of the Term: ‘Technological Singularity’ / The Metaphor Implied by the Singularity / Narratives
How Possibility Shapes the Future / Utopias & Dystopias / Thinking about the Future: What Do We Want?

Famous for his groundbreaking 1993 essay on the idea of the “Singularity,” called “The Coming Technological Singularity: How to Survive in the Post-Human Era.”

Vinge is an emeritus professor of mathematics at San Diego State University and considered one of the worlds greatest science fiction writers: a five-time winner of the Hugo Award, science fiction’s most prestigious honor! Vinge’s stories explore themes including deep space, the future, and the singularity, a term he famously coined for the future emergence of a greater-than-human intelligence brought about by the advance of technology.

Interview conducted at Los Con 39 – http://loscon.org/391/ #loscon
November 23 — 25, 2012 — LAX Marriott Hotel — Los Angeles, California

“…the spectacular feature of A.I. was not making something as smart as a human, but creating minds that were more intelligent than humans. That would be a different type of technological advance. That would change the thing that is the top creative element in technological progress, and since it would be beyond human intelligence, there is a certain unknowability about what would happen beyond that point. Therefore, I came up with the metaphor with the singularity as it is used with blackholes in general relativity reflecting this fact that there is not much information you can imagine beyond the point in time when super-human intelligence comes into place.”

Recently while at Los Con, I was privileged to do an interview with science fiction icon Vernor Vinge, who’s ideas has done much to further serious discourse around Machine Intelligence.
Vernor Vinge is well known Hugo Award-winning novels and novellas A Fire Upon the Deep (1992), A Deepness in the Sky (1999), Rainbows End (2006), Fast Times at Fairmont High (2002) and The Cookie Monster (2004), as well as for his 1984 novel The Peace War.
His his 1993 essay “The Coming Technological Singularity”, in which he argues that the creation of superhuman artificial intelligence will mark the point at which “the human era will be ended,” such that no current models of reality are sufficient to predict beyond it.

http://mindstalk.net/vinge/vinge-sing…

Within thirty years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly after, the human era will be ended.
—”The Coming Technological Singularity” by Vernor Vinge, 1993

An article in the January 1983 edition of OMNI Magazine titled ‘First Word’ by Vernor Vinge introduced the idea that the ever-accelerating evolution of computer intelligence itself might soon produce ‘a kind of singularity’.

This was Vernor’s first in-print fling at the Singularity. For context, Vinge’s novella ‘True Names’ (which addresses the concept of a technological singularity) was published in 1981 preceding Gibson’s ‘Neuromancer’.

Vinge suggests that inevitable technological singularities in intelligent civilizations represented the most logical explanation for the “vast silence” in space, commonly known as the Fermi’s Paradox (Enrico Fermi 1950).

“We are caterpillars, soon to be butterflies, and when we look to the stars, we take the vast silence of other races transformed.”

“We will soon create intelligences greater than our own.
When this happens, human history will have reached a kind of singularity, an intellectual transition as impenetrable as the knotted space-time at the center of a black hole, and the world will pass far beyond our understanding.”
